Perstorp introduced biodegradable Synmerse DC liquid for submersible liquid-liquid systems

The Swedish chemical company Perstorp presented a biodegradable liquid intended for submersible (immersion) liquid liquids, Datacenter Dynamics reports. According to the company, Synmerse DC is a synthetic fluid that ensures safe and efficient operation, which reduces the energy consumption of cooling systems.

Perstorp is owned by the Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, which has already presented its own liquid for Iceotope systems. Perstorp said it developed the liquid in collaboration with leading chip manufacturers and OEMs to ensure it is compatible with the latest equipment and immersion cooling systems. According to the company, it has extensive experience in developing synthetic fluids for a wide variety of purposes.

The company did not detail the composition of the liquid, but said that it does not contain PFAS compounds (“forever” chemicals) that can harm the environment. PFAS-based fluids have traditionally been used in immersion cooling systems, but with laws banning their use in many countries, manufacturers are looking for more environmentally friendly options based on vegetable and mineral oils, various fluorocarbons and other compounds. However, back in the summer of 2023 it was reported that the European Union intends to lift the ban on PFAS chemicals, since they are very important for the liquid liquids market.

Liquid cooling has been gaining popularity in recent years as the AI boom has led to increased packing densities in server racks. In other words, traditional air cooling systems often cannot cope with the new loads of powerful new servers. Oil and gas companies such as Gulf Oil, Shell, Castrol, ExxonMobil, ENEOS and SK Enmove are actively developing in a new niche for themselves. The American food giant Cargill and the chemical concern Chemours (Du Pont) presented their options.
