OpenAI plans to acquire Windsurf, a developer of a tool for editing software code based on artificial intelligence. The company is ready to spend about $3 billion for this, Bloomberg News reports, citing its own informed sources.

It is noted that the deal has not yet been closed, and negotiations are ongoing. Official representatives of OpenAI and Windsurf have so far refrained from commenting on this issue. It is also known that Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, was in talks to attract investments with a valuation of $3 billion, including with General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins.
In August last year, Windsurf was valued at $1.25 billion after completing another round of funding, which raised $150 million. The main investor at the time was venture capital firm General Catalyst, which was joined by Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks.
The deal is expected to be OpenAI’s largest acquisition yet and will expand ChatGPT’s coding capabilities. The company has been improving the coding feature in each new version of its language models, but it’s likely not enough as competition in the space becomes increasingly intense.
