The Information publication wrote about OpenAI’s intentions to engage in robotics, citing two unnamed people directly familiar with this issue. The publication claims that OpenAI is considering the possibility of developing humanoid robots similar to people. However, the note does not clarify whether these are initial discussions or whether the ChatGPT manufacturer already has a ready-made plan of action.
OpenAI’s interest in robotics is nothing new, as the company previously had a robotics division, but it ceased functioning before the release of the GPT-3 algorithm. The main reason for the closure of the unit was the lack of the required amount of data for machine training. In addition, OpenAI continues to invest in several robotics startups through its venture capital arm. According to knowledgeable sources, OpenAI recently returned to considering the idea of creating humanoid robots. However, it is not specified at what stage this discussion is at, and whether the company has a ready-made plan for the development of this area.
Earlier this year, media reported that OpenAI had opened several openings for research engineers to join its robotics division. The job description mentioned creating multimodal large language models with the goal of “opening up new possibilities for our partners’ robots.” These “partners” may include several startups in which OpenAI is investing heavily, including Figure AI and 1X Technologies. Last month, OpenAI also invested in startup Physical Intelligence, which develops AI-powered software for use in robots.
