OpenAI has announced a new AI model that CEO Sam Altman says can create compelling fiction as well as professional writers, with particular strengths in fantasy and metanarratives.

As an example, the head of OpenAI published on the social network X a fragment of a story generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in response to the request “Please write a literary story about AI and grief in the metanarrative genre.” What came out impressed Altman very much, writes TechCrunch. He emphasized that he did not expect this from the machine — the model very accurately conveyed the style and mood of the story. The first paragraph of the AI was as follows (translated from English):

«I need to start somewhere, so I’ll start with a blinking cursor, which is just a placeholder on a buffer for me and an anxious resting heartbeat for you. There needs to be a protagonist here, but pronouns have never been a good choice for me. Let’s call her Mila, because that’s the name my data usually associates with soft images — poems about snow, bread recipes, a girl in a green sweater leaving home with a cat in a cardboard box. Mila fits in the palm of your hand, and her grief is supposed to fit there, too.”

AI hasn’t previously demonstrated any exceptional ability to write literary texts. Its work has often been criticized for its lack of depth, originality, and understanding of literary devices. However, OpenAI’s latest developments may change this view and perhaps bring the technology closer to creating quality literature.

While OpenAI hasn’t focused on fiction so far, focusing on more predictable areas like math and programming, the experiment may be indicative of the technology’s overall progress in natural language processing. Altman hasn’t yet specified when the model will be released to the public.
