OpenAI is planning to integrate its AI-powered video generator Sora into the popular chatbot ChatGPT, the company’s management announced during a Discord session.

Today, Sora is only available through a standalone web app released in December, which can generate cinematic-quality videos up to 20 seconds long. But Rohan Sahai, the Sora project lead at OpenAI, said the company plans to expand the service’s reach and video-generating capabilities. Initially, when the service was not yet generally available, the company promoted it to creative professionals and video-production studios. Now, OpenAI is making a more focused effort to make Sora more appealing.
The company intends to integrate Sora with ChatGPT, but the timeline for this is not yet known. In the new format, the video generator will be less functional compared to a separate web application where you can edit and assemble videos. However, this will likely contribute to the growth of the already significant popularity of ChatGPT, as well as an incentive to sign up for paid subscriptions that imply higher limits on video generation. OpenAI initially launched Sora as a separate application to avoid complicating the work with ChatGPT. Over time, the developers made it possible for the community to view videos created by other users; the company is also thinking about releasing a separate Sora mobile application and has even begun looking for developers for this project.
Another direction of development is the use of Sora to generate not only video, but also static images. Such a project is also in development. ChatGPT already has the DALL-E 3 image generator, but Sora is expected to have more photorealistic images. In addition, a new version of the Sora Turbo model, which is the basis of the Sora application, is being developed.
