Nothing introduced the world’s first smartphone that glows in the dark – Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition

Nothing has announced a new version of its Phone (2a) Plus smartphone – the new product, called Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition, has a glow-in-the-dark case and packaging that were designed by the brand’s “most talented fans.” The device was born as the result of a competition held by Nothing, in which the community was invited to “create a smartphone with their own imagination.”

Nothing Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition is the first “major hardware co-creation pilot.” More than 900 submissions were received from community members with suggestions for improving everything from appearance to marketing techniques. The special version of the phone will go on sale on November 12 on the Nothing website for $399, but the circulation is limited to only a thousand units.

The concept for the updated appearance of the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition was developed by Astrid Vanhuyse and Kenta Akasaki, and it was implemented with the assistance of Nothing employees Adam Bates and Lucy Birley. The functional part of the device, including the three light strips around the rear cameras, has not undergone any changes; But the back panel is finished with a green phosphorescent material that can “emit a soft glow in the dark” for several hours – for this the case must be exposed to daylight.

The glow-in-the-dark finish also migrated to the device’s packaging – it was decorated with reflective elements and macro shots of the phone itself. This work was done by designer Ian Henry Simmonds. Andrés Mateos, with the help of software developers at Nothing, has created a collection of six project-inspired Connected Collection home screen wallpapers. A marketing campaign to promote the device with the slogan “Find your light. Capture your light” (“Find your light. Capture your light”) was developed by Sonya Palma.

Previously, Nothing published drawings of the CMF Phone 1 smartphone of its budget brand, also calling on fans of the brand to create accessories for it themselves.
