Nintendo has unveiled a long-awaited new product — the Nintendo Switch 2 portable console, which will go on sale on June 5. The console, which is an improved version of the original model, promises to bring many interesting innovations and improvements to the gaming world.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has a larger body and larger Joy-Con controllers, which are now attached magnetically, providing a secure connection. The new model is equipped with a redesigned stand that can tilt back significantly, as well as an additional USB Type-C port for charging in tabletop mode or connecting a camera. The console’s screen has increased to 7.9 inches and has a resolution of 1080p, which is significantly larger compared to the 6.2-7 inches with a resolution of 720p in the previous version. Support for up to 120 frames per second for compatible games is also noted. At the same time, the thickness of the device remains the same – 13.9 mm, and the LCD matrix with HDR support provides a bright and detailed picture, despite the lack of OLED technology.
In addition to the standard features, the detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers have been given additional functionality, including larger SL and SR buttons, as well as new controls, such as the “C” button, which is dedicated to the GameChat function. This feature allows you to communicate with friends directly during the game, using the built-in microphone, which Nintendo promises will effectively cope with the noise of the surrounding environment. The controllers can also act as a mouse for some games, such as Metroid Prime 4 Beyond.
The Nintendo Switch 2 comes with 256GB of built-in storage, a significant increase from the original model’s 32GB. Reading and writing data is noticeably faster, and a new red game card, different from previous models, ensures faster performance. For additional storage, the console supports microSD Express cards, as older SD cards won’t work.
In addition, the console received a new docking station that allows you to run games in up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS on a TV, and a built-in fan will help maintain optimal temperature during long gaming sessions. The Nintendo Switch 2 audio system has 3D sound technology, which will provide immersive sound even without a surround sound system.
The Nintendo Switch 2 supports three types of games: original games for the new console, backward compatibility with games for the first model, and special versions of existing games with improved graphics and new features. Nintendo began the presentation with a demonstration of Mario Kart World, a highly dynamic game with the ability to move freely in an open world, changing seasons, and the participation of 24 players in one race. The game also includes elements depending on the time of day and weather conditions, which highlights the increased computing power of the console.
The original Switch games that are being re-released for Switch 2 will receive new features and improved visuals. For example, in the Switch 2 edition of Mario Party Jamboree, players will be able to use the camera and Joy-Con in mouse mode for control. And the two Zelda games for Switch 2 will feature a new note-taking feature using a smartphone. Metroid Prime 4 on Switch 2 will receive mouse control support, as well as gameplay in 4K at 60 FPS or 1080p at 120 FPS.
If you own the original Nintendo Switch game, you’ll get the Switch 2 version for free as a downloadable update.
Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions will be carried over to Switch 2. Switch 2 owners who subscribe to the Expansion Pack will have access to a library of Nintendo GameCube games, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soulcalibur II, F-Zero GX, with more to come in the future. According to Nintendo, these games will feature “sharper graphics and higher resolutions” than the original releases. A reissue of the GameCube wireless controller will also be available for purchase by Nintendo Switch Online members.
Nintendo also unveiled a new Switch 2 Pro controller, which features additional rear buttons that can be reassigned, as well as an audio jack for headphones. A GameShare software update will allow game sharing over a local network, and a separate device — the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera — will allow video chats and even integrate broadcasting into some games.
The Nintendo Switch 2 promises to be a worthy sequel to the original Switch, which has already become the company’s best-selling gaming system with more than 150 million units sold.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will start at $449.99, a 50% increase over the original Switch’s $299.99 launch price. A special edition version of the console bundled with the new Mario Kart World game will be available for $499.99.
