New Oscar Rules Allow AI in Film, But with a Caveat

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially mentioned artificial intelligence in its Oscar eligibility rules for the first time. Under the new changes, AI won’t automatically affect a film’s chances of winning, but the jury will take into account how key a human’s contribution was to the film’s creation.

In a statement, the Academy said: “Generative AI and other digital tools do not, in and of themselves, make or break a nomination. What matters is the human contribution to the creative process.” According to The Verge, a more stringent option of mandatory disclosure of the fact that AI was used in the creation of a film was initially considered. However, in the end, the Academy limited itself to a general formulation, reserving the right to evaluate the role of human participation. This decision was a response to last year’s strikes by screenwriters and actors who protested against the uncontrolled introduction of technologies that threaten their profession.

In addition to the AI innovations, the Academy has introduced another important rule: now jury members will be able to vote in the final round only if they have watched all the films in the relevant category. However, as The New York Times emphasizes, this principle works on trust and participants only need to independently confirm the fact of viewing, without additional evidence.

Experts say the changes reflect Oscar’s attempt to adapt to a rapidly changing film industry where technology is playing an increasingly important role, while at the same time making it clear that humans must remain the primary creator.
