Mobile GeForce RTX 5090 Disappoints Reviewers With Weak Performance Upgrades Over RTX 4090

Laptops with discrete GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards will go on sale in a few days. Today, the first independent reviews of the flagship mobile GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card began to appear on the Internet. Portals Notebookcheck, Computer Base, Hardwareluxx and others tested the new Razer Blade 16 (2025) laptop, which in the maximum configuration with RTX 5090 is priced by the manufacturer at $4400.

In addition to next-generation graphics, the Razer Blade 16 (2025) has received a slightly modified design. The device has become thinner and lighter compared to last year’s model. If the Razer Blade 16 (2024) had dimensions of 22.0 × 251 × 355 mm and a weight of 2.45 kg, then the updated version has become more compact (dimensions 17.4–15.0 × 244 × 355 mm) and lighter (weight 2.14 kg).

The new system is based on the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor. This is not the best combination of CPU and GPU, as the said chip can become a bottleneck in the system, which is confirmed by tests. Razer Blade 16 (2025) models with GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 graphics cards will also be available for sale. In Europe, their prices start at 2999 and 3499 euros, respectively. We are talking about configurations with 32 GB of RAM. Versions with 64 GB of DDR5 memory will cost even more.

However, the performance of the new system was not impressive. As gaming tests show, the Razer Blade 16 (2025) in Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at high resolution is only 10% faster than its predecessor with RTX 4090. Computer Base tests show an identical level of performance for both cards. The Notebookcheck portal, in turn, notes a 40% increase in the performance of the new video card compared to the mobile RTX 3080 Ti.

Like the desktop versions of the GeForce RTX 50 series, the mobile variants support the latest frame generation technologies from Nvidia. In particular, we are talking about the Multi-Frame Generator (MFG), which provides a three- and even four-fold increase in FPS. For this reason, the new Razer Blade 16 is equipped with a fast OLED screen with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. However, it should be noted that a significant increase in the number of frames generated by MFG leads to a noticeable increase in input lag.

HotHardware’s benchmarks show that the MSI Raider A18 HX gaming laptop, also equipped with an RTX 5090 graphics card, demonstrates higher performance compared to the Razer Blade 16 (2025). This is explained by the fact that the MSI laptop uses a more powerful Ryzen 9 9955HX3D processor with additional 3D V-Cache cache memory technology. The test results of this system can be found in the gallery below.

Laptops with Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series graphics will be available for purchase starting March 31.
