Thinking Machines Lab positions itself as a company that aims to make artificial intelligence more understandable and accessible. According to its official statement, the company’s goal is to create an AI system that is widely understandable, customizable, versatile, and functional. To achieve this goal, the startup promises to regularly publish technical research and code, ensuring a certain level of transparency. As The Verge notes, this will distinguish Murati’s project from many other players in the market, where secrecy is often the norm.

The Thinking Machines Lab press release emphasizes that the company will not focus on creating fully autonomous systems, but on products that will help people interact with artificial intelligence. “We are building a future where everyone can access the knowledge and tools to tailor AI to their unique needs and goals,” the company said in a statement. Thus, it can be concluded that the startup will be focused on user experience and personalization of technology.

To realize her ambitious plans, Murati has assembled a world-class team of experts. She has recruited several key figures from leading AI labs to the project, including OpenAI co-founder John Schulman, who has joined as head of research, and Barrett Zoph, the former leader of OpenAI who has become the startup’s CTO. According to The Verge, Schulman is actively involved in recruiting the team, holding meetings with researchers just a few blocks from OpenAI’s headquarters. Jonathan Lachman, who previously headed OpenAI’s special projects team, has also joined the project.
