Microsoft to soon begin rolling out Copilot AI to video games at scale

Analysts believe that Microsoft is working on mass adoption of its AI chatbot platform Copilot in video games. This conclusion was made based on the company’s list of current vacancies. Specifically, Microsoft in Beijing is looking for a senior software engineer specializing in 3D rendering engines commonly used to create video games – Babylon.js, three.js and Unity.

Microsoft has previously said on multiple occasions that it plans to make gaming a larger part of the Copilot experience. In May 2024, the company revealed that it was working on bringing Copilot to video games, citing Minecraft as an example. Microsoft demonstrated, among other things, how Copilot would answer questions like “How do I make a sword?” in the game, search the player’s inventory for the necessary materials, and instruct them on how to obtain key missing components.

In January, engineer Alexey Shabanov discovered two animated characters in Copilot designed to interact with users through sound effects and animation. He believes that Microsoft is experimenting with character-based features in Copilot in an effort to increase user engagement.

In February, Microsoft showed off an AI model called Muse, which the company said would soon be used in short, interactive games on Copilot. Trained on the multiplayer game Bleeding Edge from game developer Ninja Theory, Muse understands the 3D game world, the physics of the game, and how the game responds to user input. This allows the model to participate in AI-rendered gameplay.

Now it looks like Microsoft is putting its plans into action. “Are you passionate about gaming and interested in creating innovative solutions for billions of users?” reads the job description for a senior software engineer specializing in 3D rendering engines. “If you have experience in gaming or a strong passion for it, this is the perfect opportunity for you!”
