Microsoft to Slow Down OneNote for Windows 10 Ahead of End of Support

The legacy OneNote app for Windows 10 is reaching end of life, with support ending on October 14, 2025, at the same time as Windows 10. The end of support for OneNote for Windows 10 has been known for some time, but Microsoft reminded users of the news this week, along with some insight into what users can expect in the coming months.

«As we continue to improve OneNote to create a unified, modern experience, we remind you that support for OneNote for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. To avoid disruption, we strongly encourage your organization to fully migrate to OneNote on Windows (OneNote M365) and remove the legacy app as soon as possible. This will ensure you have full access to the latest features, security updates, and improved experiences,” reads a new post in the Microsoft 365 Message Center.

It is also noted that starting in June 2025, OneNote for Windows 10 will “run slower, impacting online collaboration and cross-device access.” In July, Microsoft will begin showing users of the legacy app banners offering to upgrade to the current version of OneNote.

Previously, Microsoft had several versions of OneNote, but the software giant decided to switch to a single unified version of the application. This process began several years ago and continues in 2024. Microsoft has long recommended that users switch to the current version of OneNote, including because of the new features based on artificial intelligence.
