Microsoft is working on a consumer mixed reality (MR) headset focused on interacting with media content and games. As part of this project, the software giant is collaborating with Samsung Display, which will develop and supply OLEDoS (OLED on silicon) displays for the headset. Microsoft’s MR headset is expected to hit the market in 2026.
According to the source, Samsung will supply Microsoft with hundreds of thousands of OLEDoS displays for mass production of mixed reality headsets. Microsoft’s headset is expected to be released in volume only after the specifications for the new OLEDoS displays are finalized. It is noted that the commercial launch of the device will take place “at the earliest” in 2026.
Last year, Samsung formed a new division called M Project, which develops OLEDoS panels. The division is led by Samsung Display Vice President Jaebeom Choi, who also heads the Micro Display team at Samsung Display. It is also known that components for OLEDoS displays are being developed by the Samsung System LSI division.
Interestingly, Samsung’s mobile division MX Business has already received samples of OLEDoS panels from Samsung Display for its own mixed reality device, but has chosen Sony as its supplier for such displays. According to the source, this has put serious pressure on the Samsung Display division, which is striving to succeed in its partnership with Microsoft and expects Samsung MX Business to still be interested in its OLEDoS panels.
