While more than half (53%) of PC users are still running Windows 10, which Microsoft is ending support for on October 14, Windows 11 is gaining momentum. Its global market share is just 10% smaller than Windows 10. As reported by Windows Latest, Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 24H2 has entered the final phase of its rollout.

As with Windows 11 23H2 or 22H2 in the past, “the final phase is when a Windows 11 feature update is declared ‘fully ready’ and set to download automatically,” Windows Latest explained.

Microsoft said this applies to devices running Windows 11 Home and Pro versions 23H2, 22H2, and 21H2 — all of which will automatically receive the update to version 24H2.

As Windows Latest writes, “You’ll get a notification when the update is downloaded and waiting to be installed, and that’s where things get interesting, because Windows 11 won’t let you cancel an update once it’s downloaded.” Microsoft will give users the option to delay the update, but not cancel it.

Therefore, it is recommended to allow the update to download and install on your PC unless there is a compelling reason not to do so. In this case, you can run the command prompt to exit the update process.

After October 14, all Windows 10 PC users will need to apply the free upgrade to Windows 11 if their hardware is compatible, or buy a new PC if it is not. They will also be offered a 12-month extension of Windows 10 security patches for $30.
