FuriosaAI, founded by former Samsung and AMD employees, develops chips that dramatically speed up the running and serving of AI models, including text-generation models like Meta✴’s Llama 2 and Llama 3. Meta✴ is expected to announce its intentions to acquire FuriosaAI as early as this month.

According to the data, FuriosaAI has raised about 90 billion Korean won (approximately $61.94 million) from investors including South Korean tech company Naver. FuriosaAI has also previously announced that it is working with potential clients in the United States, Japan, and India, without disclosing their names.

Experts say the move is clearly aimed at reducing reliance on chip-making powerhouse Nvidia and complements Meta✴’s own efforts to build high-performance, efficient AI accelerators.

Meta✴ has said it plans to spend up to $65 billion this year to support its AI goals, and the acquisition of FuriosaAI could significantly accelerate the development and implementation of new AI technologies in Meta✴’s own products.
