Meta✴ management has told data center design and construction companies that it is considering building a campus in Louisiana, Wyoming, or Texas. In February, senior management at the social media giant visited sites where the facility could be built. In 2022, OpenAI, with the support of Microsoft, launched ChatGPT, sparking a surge in AI investment around the world, with companies across a wide range of industries seeking to deploy their AI systems.
A Meta✴ spokesperson dismissed the company’s plans, saying Meta✴ has already disclosed its data center plans and that anything beyond that is “pure speculation.” In January, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would spend $65 billion this year expanding its AI infrastructure. By comparison, Microsoft will spend $80 billion on data centers in fiscal 2025; Amazon is planning to spend more in 2025 than the $75 billion it is estimated to need in 2024.
