MediaTek unveils Dimensity 8400, the world’s first mid-range smartphone chip with eight “big” cores

MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 8400 single-chip platform, which is the successor to last year’s Dimensity 8300, and is also designed for mid-range and pre-flagship performance smartphones. The new chip is manufactured using a 4 nm process technology and uses the All Big Core architecture, which was previously used by the manufacturer in flagship-level products.

Dimensity 8400 is equipped with eight Cortex-A725 cores with an operating frequency of up to 3.25 GHz. This results in a 41% increase in multi-core performance compared to the Dimensity 8300, while reducing power consumption during peak performance periods by 44%. The microprocessor has twice the L2 cache and 50% more L3 cache than the Dimensity 8300.

For graphics processing, a Mali-G720 MC6 accelerator with an operating frequency of 1.3 GHz is provided. Peak graphics performance is up 24% and power consumption is down 42% compared to the Dimensity 8300. The Mali-G720 GPU works in tandem with a proprietary MFRC for smoother gameplay and MediaTek Adaptive Gaming technology. Technology 3.0, which optimizes performance in games and applications in real time.

The Dimensity 8400 uses the NPU 880 neural coprocessor to deliver significant performance improvements for AI-related tasks. For image processing, the Imagiq 1080 ISP is coupled with an integrated QPD hardware upscaling engine. According to MediaTek, the presence of a powerful neural processor (NPU) in combination with the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE) will enable new opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence.

Devices based on Dimensity 8400 will appear on the market soon. One of the first will be the Xiaomi Redmi Turbo 4 smartphone, the hardware basis of which will be a customized version of the chip – Dimensity 8400-Ultra.
