Links shortened using goo.gl will stop working in August 2025

In 2018, Google announced the closure of the goo.gl short URL generation service for consumers and developers, and a year later it was used to generate the last link. Now the IT giant has announced that from August 25, 2025, links created using goo.gl will stop working.

Google said in a statement that by this time more than six years will have passed since the last short link was created. In addition, as of August 23, 2024, short URLs that are still working will be accompanied by a warning: “This link will no longer work in the near future.” However, users will still be able to follow such links and check the option so that the warning does not appear again the next time they click.

Google also notes that a message indicating that short links are about to end may cause the redirection process to fail. “For example, if you use other 302 redirects, the interstitial message may prevent the redirect chain from completing correctly. If you’ve embedded social metadata into your landing page, the interstitial messaging will likely cause it to no longer appear where the original link did. For this reason, we recommend clicking on these links as quickly as possible,” Google said in a statement.

The addition of an interstitial message about the imminent end of support for short links is being rolled out gradually, so users still have time to save the information they are interested in or adjust their settings. In addition to this, Google suggests adding the query parameter “si=1” to existing goo.gl links to block the mentioned message from appearing.
