Let’s do it again, boy: the production of the God of War series had to start from scratch

Deadline and IGN, citing their own sources, spoke about changes in the production of the Prime Video series (Amazon streaming service) based on the fantasy slashers God of War.

Let’s remember that the last time Prime Video talked about the show was in December 2022. At that time, the project was positioned as an adaptation of God of War (2018) about the travels of the Spartan Kratos and his son Atreus across the Scandinavian world of Midgard.

The showrunner was Rafe Judkins, known for his work on The Wheel of Time, and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby wrote and produced.

After almost two years and several episodes already written (and approved by Sony/Amazon) for the first season, Deadline and IGN report, all three – Judkins, Fergus and Ostby – left the project. The show is now getting a reboot.

Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM are believed to be planning to hire new writers and take the God of War series in a different creative direction. Which one exactly is currently unclear.

God of War (2018) told how, after the death of his wife, Kratos and Atreus set off on a dangerous journey to scatter her ashes from the top of the highest mountain. Testing family ties for strength and fighting with the gods were included.

The series has been in production since March 2022. The production includes Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Santa Monica Studio. Creative director Cory Barlog serves as executive producer on the project.
