Japanese build smart home robot Mi-Mo by crossing Pixar lamp and stool

Japanese company Jizai has built a robot called Mi-Mo, which resembles a lamp named Luxo Jr., the mascot of Pixar. The machine is controlled by several models of artificial intelligence, which opens up a wide range of possibilities.

Unlike the project previously presented by Apple’s robotics division, Mi-Mo is capable of movement. With the help of AI, it can “think” and act autonomously, responding to visual, sound and other signals; remote control functions are also available. Externally, the robot resembles a stool: it has a wooden top panel and eight legs covered with wood. The owner can independently create applications for Mi-Mo, based on its capabilities, or order their development from the manufacturer.

Mi-Mo has dimensions of 80 × 45 × 45 cm and weighs about 8 kg. The design includes 18 joints in the legs and 4 in the “neck”, which ends with a reflector. Instead of a light bulb, a 4-inch round display with a resolution of 720 × 720 pixels is installed, and signals from the outside world are recorded using a camera with a resolution of 4608 × 2592 pixels.

The top panel is easily removed – you can place additional equipment or the logo of the client company on it. Jizai is ready to provide drawings of the Mi-Mo design, which will allow owners to make not only software but also hardware changes. Remote control is carried out using V-Sido software, the license for which must be purchased separately.

In practice, Mi-Mo can be used in the entertainment, retail, food service and healthcare industries. It will be useful at events and in educational institutions – anywhere that robots capable of moving and interacting with people are in demand. Jizai is open to cooperation with partners who will help develop new application scenarios. The company did not disclose the cost of Mi-Mo.
