Japanese 2nm chips are getting closer: Rapidus received the first ASML lithographic EUV scanner

The young Japanese company Rapidus expects to establish serial production of 2-nm semiconductor products by 2027 on orders from various clients; as early as April next year, it expects to launch pilot production of this class of products. To do this, it began installing ASML lithographic equipment, which it is already receiving through the Hokkaido airport.

As DigiTimes reports, citing Japanese media, this week Rapidus held a symbolic ceremony to receive the first ASML Twinscan NXE:3800E lithography scanner for working with EUV – ultra-hard ultraviolet radiation. Such equipment is used in the production of 2nm chips, and for the first time came to Japan for use in the production of semiconductor components.

The company does not want to specify how many similar systems Rapidus will receive to launch pilot production of 2nm chips by April 2025, but makes it clear that one or two will not be enough. Each system is transported in several large containers, weighs 71 tons when assembled and is 3.4 meters high. Installation of such equipment implies good protection from seismic effects, which is quite important for Japan. According to Rapidus representatives, preparations for mastering the production of 2nm chips are going according to plan. The company sent about 150 technical specialists for internships in the United States to gain experience at IBM. By the time pilot production of 2nm chips starts in April next year, the company will employ between 300 and 400 employees. Rapidus expects to receive the ASML equipment necessary to launch pilot production of 2nm chips by the end of this year.
