IPhone 16s are selling 20% better than last year’s in China, but that doesn’t make Apple any better

The new Apple iPhone 16 showed an active start in China, according to data from the research company Counterpoint: in the first three weeks they were sold 20% more actively than the 2023 models.

New Apple and Huawei smartphones went on sale in China on the same day – September 20. Apple offered the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro with artificial intelligence functions, which, however, will start working later; Huawei responded with the world’s first three-leaf smartphone, the Mate XT, at an exorbitant price of $2,800. It shows that competition between the two companies is intensifying in the world’s largest smartphone market, with the US manufacturer steadily losing market share to local rivals in recent quarters.

«We are seeing strong sales of the iPhone 16 series in China,” Reuters quoted Counterpoint as saying. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, which lead the new line, are selling especially well in the country – their sales increased by 44% compared to similar models of 2023.

It is worth noting, however, that overall iPhone sales over the past three weeks decreased by 2% year-on-year. This is due to the decline in sales of models of previous generations and increased competition from Huawei with its Mate and Pura series smartphones.
