Intel does not abandon plans to release Falcon Shores accelerators

Intel Corporation, according to the HPC Wire resource, does not intend to curtail the project to develop Falcon Shores accelerators, despite the restructuring aimed at strengthening its position in the segment of products with x86 architecture. Falcon Shores products, as previously planned, will appear on the market in 2025.

It was assumed that Falcon Shores solutions would debut after the release of the Rialto Bridge series accelerators, which were supposed to replace Ponte Vecchio. However, in March 2023, Intel canceled the release of Rialto Bridge, and recently information appeared that the future of Falcon Shores is also vague. Now Intel has dispelled doubts.

Representatives of the corporation said that Falcon Shores products will be released in the form of GPU accelerators. Previously, Intel abandoned the use of a hybrid CPU + GPU configuration in these solutions. At the same time, it is said that the new maps will include elements of Gaudi AI accelerators. It is argued that this design will provide Falcon Shores with advantages over competing products that use only GPU units.

«“Falcon Shores is truly a GPU-based accelerator that uses Gaudi technology,” said an Intel spokeswoman. According to available information, the accelerators will have a modular design, support for modern AI frameworks, scalable I/O interfaces and HBM3e memory. According to rumors, the release of new products will be organized at TSMC using 3nm technology. Intel continues to target Falcon Shores at the high-performance computing market.

At the same time, Intel, which is in a difficult financial situation, intends to actively develop the x86 ecosystem. The corporation recently announced its intention to optimize Xeon Granite Rapids processors to work with NVIDIA AI accelerators.
