Intel decided not to supply the Falcon Shores accelerators to the market

Intel co-geneal director Michelle Johnston Holthaus gave comments about Falcon Shores accelerators, which were supposed to go on sale in 2025. According to her, these products will not appear in the commercial market. It was expected that Falcon Shores will come out after Rialto Bridge accelerators, which were supposed to replace Ponte Vecchio.

But in March 2023, Intel canceled the release of Rialto Bridge. Then it was reported that the debut of Falcon Shores is postponed. After the Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger (Pat Gelsinger) resigned, the future Falcon Shores was in question. Trying to clarify the situation, Intel said that the plans for the issuance of these decisions are preserved – they were planned to be supplied as a GPU, and not hybrid accelerators, as said initially. However, at the end of 2024, information appeared that Intel considers Falcon Shores as a test product.

As Holthouse said now, Intel really uses Falcon Shores “as an internal test chip” – without plans for its withdrawal to the commercial market. According to her, the main attention will be paid to the Jaguar Shores accelerators, which are supposed to help develop a “system solution on the rack scale” to strengthen the positions in the field of data centers oriented towards the tasks of AI.

«AICs are an attractive market for us. But we have not yet fixed in this segment properly. Therefore, we simplify the road map and concentrate resources, ”Holthaus said. She also added that customers want to get a full -scale rack decision, and not just chips. It is expected that the Falcon Shores project will help to create a complex platform covering system components, network and memory. Probably, we are talking about an analogue of the NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 supercurrents.

In general, Intel is trying to adjust the plan for further work after a series of failures. The corporation catastrophically lagged behind NVIDIA and AMD for sales of and accelerators-so, the volume of Gaudi has not reached even $ 500 million. Against this background, Intel has to change the strategy in a hurry.
