Intel begins recruiting candidates for the position of CEO

Having abruptly retired Patrick Gelsinger, who headed Intel until December 1, the company’s board of directors began searching for new candidates for the post of CEO. One of them is Lip-Bu Tan, who left Intel in August due to disagreement with its management policies.

Prior to this, Lip-Bu Tan served on the Intel board of directors for two years and was considered one of the candidates for the post of CEO. Informed sources explained to Reuters that the Intel board of directors is now considering mainly external candidates to fill this vacancy, and therefore the head of Marvell Technology Matt Murphy was included in the list of applicants. The latter said at yesterday’s quarterly earnings event that he is 100% focused on the Marvell business. Murphy has led the company since 2016 and has also spent nearly 22 years in various positions at Maxim Integrated Products.

There is no favorite among the candidates yet; the process of searching for a new general director has just begun. This procedure could take several months, but for now the relevant responsibilities are shared between CFO David Zinsner and head of the grocery business Michelle Johnston Holthaus. Industry analysts expect that Intel’s search for a new CEO will be even more difficult and lengthy this time around than in the previous two cases, and the company will focus on external candidates as people from Intel have demonstrated poor management performance in recent years.

Lip-Bu Tan previously headed chip design software developer Cadence; he joined Intel’s board of directors two years ago with the goal of participating in restoring the company’s status as the world’s largest chip manufacturer. Since October 2023, he was entrusted with overseeing Intel’s manufacturing activities. It is believed that Tan’s departure from the company was associated with a conflict with Gelsinger over the latter’s plan. Now that this obstacle has been removed, the board may wish to bring back Lip-Bu Tan as the new CEO.
