Instagram started showing users ads with their faces

Instagram✴ has begun testing a feature that generates advertising images with users themselves in a non-standard setting and places these images in their feed. In one case, an Instagram user✴ saw himself in front of an “endless mirror maze.”

«Used Meta✴ AI to edit selfies, and now Instagram✴ has used my face to show me targeted ads,” he said on the Reddit platform. The social network prepared a slideshow for him from images created by AI. “Crafted for You: The Mirror Maze,” reads the associated post’s Location entry. “Imagine reflecting on life in an endless mirror maze, where you are the center of attention,” the text of the publication says.

The Instagram✴ administration does not consider this function to be advertising, reports 404 Media. It is connected with the Imagine Yourself function on the Meta✴ AI platform – the user is asked to take several self-portraits from different angles and asked to create an image with him in a non-standard setting. After this, Instagram✴ in some cases begins to independently generate images of the user in random scenes that, according to the platform, match his interests. But this function is available only to those who have completed the Imagine Yourself registration process – during the process, the system warns that Meta✴ can subsequently generate images with the user’s participation and show them in his feed. It is emphasized that no one else will see them.
