Late last month, the Chinese company Huawei introduced the foldable smartphone Mate X6, which is the direct successor to last year’s Mate X5. The latter never went beyond the domestic market, but the new product, which received a larger display, a thinner and lighter body, as well as updated cameras, on the contrary, will soon appear in the markets of different countries.
According to Huawei, the Mate X6 uses a new “distributed basalt architecture” to improve the smartphone’s durability. It includes an innovative carbon fiber support layer for the internal display, an improved hinge mechanism, an aluminum frame, and highly thermally conductive graphene. All this helped increase the rigidity and strength of the smartphone body.
The Mate X6 is equipped with an internal 7.93-inch display with support for a resolution of 2440 × 2240 pixels, as well as an external 6.45-inch display with a resolution of 2440 × 1080 pixels. In both cases, LTPO OLED matrices are used with a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The external display is protected from mechanical damage by Kunlun Glass 2.
The main camera of the smartphone is based on a 50-megapixel RYYB-type sensor with variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0) and support for optical image stabilization. It is complemented by a 40 MP wide-angle module (f/2.2) and a 48 MP periscopic telephoto module (f/3.4) with support for 4x optical and 100x digital zoom. There is a 1.5 megapixel multispectral camera for macro photography at a distance of 5 cm. The internal and external displays are complemented by 8 megapixel cameras with support for shooting 4K video.
The manufacturer does not specify which microprocessor became the hardware basis of the Mate X6. It is assumed that the smartphone uses its own Kirin 9020 chip, which was used in the Mate 70 smartphones. The configuration is complemented by 12 GB of RAM and a 256 or 512 GB drive. Autonomous operation is provided by a 5110 mAh battery with support for 66 W fast wired charging, 50 W wireless charging and 7.5 W reverse wireless charging.
The most important difference between the global version of the Mate X6 and the Chinese one is the software platform. The home market version may come with HarmonyOS Next, which is completely devoid of Android traces and does not support apps for the Google platform. In turn, the global version runs on the EMUI platform, which is actually a fork of Android, albeit without Google services, but it still supports Android applications.
The smartphone will be available in black, gray and red body colors. You can buy a Mate X6 with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of ROM for €1999. Note that the Samsung Galaxy Fold6 is offered in Europe for the same amount. Deliveries of the new Huawei product will begin on January 6.
