Chinese company Huawei Technologies has cut prices on a number of high-end smartphones in a new move to boost sales amid fierce competition in China’s smartphone market, the world’s largest. In the official online store, discounts are up to 20%, writes the local resource South China Morning Post.
Huawei Pura 70
For example, the price of the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra smartphone with a 1 TB flash drive, released in April, has been reduced to 8,999 yuan (about $1,233), which is 18% less than the original price of 10,999 yuan (about $1,507). The version of the smartphone with 512 GB of flash memory has lost even more price in the official Huawei Vmall online store – about 20%.
The Huawei Mate X5 foldable smartphone, released in September 2023, is now offered for 2,500 yuan or 19% cheaper than its original price of 12,999 yuan (about $1,781). According to market research firm CINNO, Huawei Mate X5 has been the best-selling foldable smartphone in China since launch.
Previously, in July, Huawei offered a discount of up to 1,000 yuan on the Pura 70 smartphone. As noted by SCMP, the latest discounts were offered following the launch of the flagship Mate 70 series and foldable Mate X6 in November, as the company targets a larger share of the premium smartphone market dominated by Apple along with several Chinese competitors.
According to consulting company Canalys, sales of premium Huawei smartphones – models costing more than $600 – grew by 34% in the third quarter of 2024. This has given Huawei a 33% share of China’s high-end smartphone market, closing in on Apple’s 52% share.
