Honor Invests $10 Billion in AI to Beat Samsung and Apple

Chinese smartphone maker Honor has announced a massive $10 billion investment in artificial intelligence (AI) over the next five years, as it seeks to transform itself into a company that creates an ecosystem of AI devices that spans not just smartphones but also laptops, tablets, wearables, and other categories of gadgets.

Honor intends to actively develop cooperation with Google and Qualcomm to implement advanced AI solutions. As part of this partnership, Honor plans to integrate Google’s Gemini family of AI models into its devices, as well as use Qualcomm’s advanced chips to optimize the operation of AI functions. The company is also considering cooperation with other tech giants to expand the capabilities of its AI products.

Honor has announced its intention to create an open AI ecosystem and called on the entire industry to collaborate. In this context, the company has unveiled a three-stage plan called the Alpha Plan.

In the first phase, Honor will develop a “super-intelligent” smartphone with human-centric AI designed to enhance user productivity and improve their daily lives. The second phase involves building an open AI ecosystem that enables seamless interactions across devices and platforms, including support for cross-platform integration. The third phase aims to prepare for the era of artificial general intelligence (AGI), which can theoretically surpass human cognitive abilities.

Honor is already working on a mobile AI agent with a graphical interface that can perform practical tasks such as booking hotels, organizing meetings, and managing a user’s schedule. The company is also developing AiMAGE and AI Upscale image processing tools. These technologies will help improve the clarity of images using AI cores and retouch old portraits. Honor will also integrate a deepfake detection tool into its latest flagship smartphones and foldable devices.

Honor hopes the proposed initiatives will help strengthen the company’s presence in the international market, especially in the premium segment dominated by Apple and Samsung.

Honor has also committed to providing seven years of Android update and security patch support for its Magic series smartphones, similar to what Google and Samsung do.
