HDMI 2.2 will be released in January: resolution, refresh rate and bandwidth will increase

A new version of the HDMI standard is expected to be announced at CES 2025 in January – the HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) organization notified some media outlets about it. The standard will likely be called HDMI 2.2 and will offer higher bandwidth and support for higher resolutions than its predecessor.

The press conference will take place on January 6, the HDMI Forum confirmed – technical details regarding the new version of the standard are expected at the event. There is a version that the upcoming Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 and AMD Radeon RX 8000 series video cards will support HDMI 2.2 – both companies also scheduled press conferences for January 6. If this is confirmed, HDMI will no longer be inferior to the latest DisplayPort 2.1.

HDMI LA confirmed that the new generation interface will support higher resolutions, refresh rates and improved signal transmission quality – it is possible that the cable will need to be updated to support the new standard. The latest HDMI 2.1b standard supports data transfer at speeds up to 48 Gbps, which corresponds to 8K resolution at 60 frames per second, but only with Display Stream Compression (DSC). The updated version may eliminate the need for DSC or improve the implementation of this technology, increasing image quality.
