Google Unveils Pixel 9a — With Biggest Pixel Battery, iPhone Design, and Starting at $499

Google has officially unveiled the most affordable smartphone from its new product line — Pixel 9a. The new product is built on the latest Google Tensor G4 chipset with a Titan M2 security coprocessor, features increased battery capacity, and new photographic capabilities. The smartphone complies with the IP68 standard for protection against dust and water.

The design of the device is similar to other representatives of the Pixel 9 series. The smartphone’s screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with flat edges that flow into a flat aluminum frame. The back is flat polycarbonate panel emphasizes the rejection of the rounded edges of its predecessor, the Pixel 8a. Pixel 9a is equipped with the new Google Tensor G4 chip with Titan M2 security coprocessor. The smartphone comes with 8 GB of RAM and a storage of 128 or 256 GB.

The Pixel 9a features a 6.3-inch pOLED display with a resolution of 2424 × 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The display reaches a maximum brightness of 1800 cd/m² when displaying HDR content (measured at 100% of the display area), and the peak brightness when measured at 5% of the area is 2700 cd/m². The display supports HDR, but with a limited 8-bit color depth. The optical fingerprint scanner is located under the screen.

The smartphone has a redesigned camera system. The main 48-megapixel camera with autofocus, ƒ/1.7 aperture, and optical image stabilization can record 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. It is complemented by a 13-megapixel wide-angle camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture. The front 13-megapixel camera is limited to shooting video in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. Pixel 9a has new photography features – macro photography and astrophotography.

The Pixel 9a runs Android 15 out of the box and supports all of Google’s new AI features. Like other Pixel devices, it comes with seven years of OS and security updates.

According to Google, the Pixel 9a’s 5,100 mAh lithium-ion battery provides more than 30 hours of battery life. The new product has the largest battery of any Pixel ever released. It supports fast 23W wired charging and Qi wireless charging. The smartphone is available in four colors: Obsidian (black), Porcelain (white), Peony (pink) and Iris (purple).

The Google Pixel 9a smartphone starts at $499 and will go on sale in April.
