In April, information appeared that Google was working on an updated version of the Chromecast TV set-top box with Google TV (4K) – the current version was released back in 2020. Now it has become known that the device will be called Google TV Streamer, reports 9to5Google, which also published images of the upcoming new product.

The updated console differs from its predecessors: if they were only slightly larger than a flash drive, now it is a device that is installed on a table or shelf. It’s unclear whether this serves any practical purpose – for example, it could be the UWB-based Tap to Cast feature that appeared on the Google Pixel Tablet. Moreover, Google TV Streamer is shaped like a docking station for a Pixel Tablet. There are two cables connected to the back of the set-top box – probably power and HDMI, and the thickness of the device is minimal.

The remote control has undergone minor changes, becoming somewhat longer. Below the five-way D-Pad are the Back and Home buttons; and the voice input button lacks the Google Assistant logo, which has replaced a modest microphone icon. The volume rocker has moved from the right side to the front panel, and a mute button has appeared. There are YouTube and Netflix shortcuts, as well as a Magic button and a power button. Finally, it’s worth noting that Google TV Streamer’s name does not mention Chromecast or Google Cast.
