Google intends to find “real applications” by quantum calculations in five years – in Nvidia do not agree

Currently, there is no consensus in the world about when cash calculations become practical. Forecasts vary from several years to decades. Google plans to release commercial quantum computing applications over the next five years, the head of the Google quantum unit Hartmut Neven said Reuters. At the same time, NVIDIA believes that the practical use of quantum systems will take about 20 years.

«We are optimistic and believe that for five years we will see real applications that are possible only on quantum computers, ”said the founder and head of the Google Quantum AI unit.

The practical application of the quantum calculations that Google is talking about is associated with material science, including the creation of capacious and durable batteries for electric vehicles, the development of new drugs and, possibly, alternative energy sources.

The situation with quantum calculations, which will allow an order of magnitude to speed up data processing compared to current supercomputers, resembles the history of artificial intelligence. Prior to the launch of the ChatGPT AI-Chatt in 2022, artificial intelligence technologies were mainly engaged in scientists. They worked on AI, made discoveries and technological breakthroughs to accelerate the implementation, but did not have a clear understanding when AI enters the stage of commercial use.

The head of Nvidia Jensen Huang (Jensen Huang) at the CES 2025 exhibition in Las Vegas predicted that the practical use of quantum computers will begin about 20 years later. After this forecast, several companies operating in the field of quantum calculations lost a total of $ 8 billion market value.

Google has been engaged in quantum calculations since 2012 and has already created several quantum chips. In December last year, the company introduced the quantum processor of Willow with 105 superconducting cubes.
