Google has turned the production of Chromecast TV set-top boxes

Google has announced that it is ceasing production of Chromecast TV set-top boxes. The devices will be available for sale until stocks run out. The company will also continue to release software and security updates for the latest versions of Chromecast TV set-top boxes, but Google did not specify which Chromecast models it is talking about. The latest series of Chromecast with Google TV devices were released in 2022.

Google notes that “technology has changed radically” since the release of the first Chromecast TV boxes in 2013. “We’ve invested heavily in bringing Google Cast technology to millions of TV devices, including Android TV. Now we’re taking the next step in the development of TV streaming devices that will add even more features to your smart TV, built on the same Chromecast technology,” says the company.

Instead of Chromecast, Google will be offering its newest $99.99 set-top box, the Google TV Streamer, which goes on sale September 24th. The new product offers improved technical specifications and functions compared to its predecessor. For example, it has a more efficient processor, and also supports Thread networks and the Matter connectivity standard for smart home devices.

The new Google TV Streamer has a new form factor. Now this is not a USB dongle, but a desktop media console.
