OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is experiencing hardware overload due to the popularity of its new ChatGPT image generation tool, which will limit the release of new products and features.

Altman says OpenAI is trying to cope with the situation, but users should expect at least delays in releases, as well as service outages and platform slowdowns. However, as TechCrunch notes, the company assures that it has the situation under control. “Things will break and service will be slow at times as we work through capacity issues,” Altman wrote. “We are trying to resolve issues quickly so that things actually work.”
Recall that the recently released new image generator caused a stir thanks to its ability to imitate various styles, in particular the popular style of the animation studio Studio Ghibli. However, the company is unable to cope with the influx of users, and employees are forced to work late and even on weekends to keep the system running.
To reduce the load on its servers, OpenAI has delayed the launch of a new image generation tool for free ChatGPT users, and the ability to create videos using Sora has been temporarily disabled for new users. The company has not specified when the congestion issues will be finally resolved and is continuing to work on improving the infrastructure.
On Monday, ChatGPT recorded one million new users signing up for the service in just one hour. It also brings the total to 500 million weekly users and 20 million subscribers, up significantly from the 300 million and 15.5 million weekly users at the end of 2024.
