Gemini’s large language model of artificial intelligence sometimes offers impressive capabilities, but people will only appreciate them once they experience them themselves. Google aims to integrate it into most of its services, including its mapping service, where AI becomes a source of reference information.

Google Maps has begun rolling out a new feature, the Ask about place button, Android Authority has noted. The feature is rolling out gradually — not everyone notices it, and its capabilities vary from user to user. By opening individual locations in Google Maps, you can ask Gemini questions about those locations, such as how to get to your destination. The mechanism is relatively simple — the request to the AI is accompanied by a URL from the mapping service.
The button, when available, appears for most locations, but depends on their scale. For example, it is missing when viewing a city or region as a whole. Sometimes Gemini responds that it cannot work with maps; in some cases, a paid Gemini Advanced subscription is required to process requests. Google probably began rolling out the feature to a wide range of users without finalizing it or making any relevant statements, and in the future, the company will eventually establish an adequate mechanism for its operation.
