French AI Assistant Le Chat Reaches 1 Million App Store Downloads in 14 Days

French startup Mistral has announced that it has reached a major milestone for its chatbot Le Chat, which has been downloaded more than 1 million times in just two weeks since its initial launch. As TechCrunch notes, the app quickly became the number one free download on the App Store in France, demonstrating strong user interest in the new product.

Le Chat’s popularity has received support from the highest levels. French President Emmanuel Macron urged users to choose the AI assistant in a recent TV interview. “Download Le Chat, created by Mistral, not ChatGPT by OpenAI or anything else,” he said. The announcement came ahead of the AI Action Summit in Paris, where the future of artificial intelligence (AI) is being discussed.

Interestingly, the rapid success of new, previously unknown AI applications is no longer a rarity. OpenAI once made a splash with the launch of ChatGPT, which, despite being limited to iOS users in the US, gained 500 thousand downloads in just six days and, according to analytics company Appfigures, the total number of ChatGPT downloads has already reached 350 million to date.

Other AI players are also getting in on the action. In particular, Chinese app DeepSeek recorded a million downloads in just three weeks from January 10 to January 31, but the real surge in popularity came at the end of the month, when the site’s daily users jumped to 6 million in a matter of days.

It is worth saying that Mistral faces serious competition not only from other startups, but also from tech giants. It is known that Google and Microsoft are actively developing their own chatbots, striving to take a place as the main chatbot on the screens of users’ smartphones. In particular, Google is promoting its Gemini platform, and Microsoft is promoting the Copilot AI system.

The rapid development of the AI chatbot market shows high demand from users for the technology, and the success of Le Chat in France could be a definite step for Mistral in the fight for global recognition and competition with the largest players in the industry.
