“Flat” software will appear in the Meta VR application store

The app store for virtual reality headsets is predominantly filled with software with a 3D interface, as well as apps and games with augmented reality functions. But the day before, Meta✴ CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that 2D and spatial applications are now “welcome” on the platform.

However, the platform is not limited to this – it also supports progressive web applications (PWA). Until now, the company has closely monitored content in the app store, which also included an experimental App Lab section. Now Meta✴ has decided to change its approach to the project and turn the platform into a kind of Google or Apple app store – developers can add software with an interface similar to applications for smartphones and tablets.

Meta✴ Quest users can launch such applications and place them anywhere in the virtual space – up to six can work simultaneously. Flat applications can also be run inside virtual reality applications, something similar was previously implemented on Apple’s VisionOS platform. Perhaps Meta✴ decided that Apple had set the right example for its colleagues when it released the Vision Pro headset, which from the very beginning could run applications originally created for the iPhone and iPad.
