EU Set to Fine Apple and Meta for Antitrust Violations

The European Union may fine US companies Apple and Meta✴ Platforms in the coming weeks for violating the region’s antitrust laws. The investigation into the IT giants’ activities, which began last year, has come to an end, and a final decision on the matter will be made soon, said Teresa Ribera, head of the European Commission’s antitrust agency.

Recall that in March last year, the European Commission launched an investigation into Apple and Meta✴ to identify violations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that the companies may have committed during their operations in the region. Last month, media outlets reported, based on information received from an informed source, that Apple and Meta✴ would face small fines as a result of this investigation.

Teresa Ribera herself had previously stated that she was ready to announce the decision of the agency under her control regarding Apple and Meta✴ in March. Now she said that it will take a little longer. “The decision will be made in the coming weeks,” Ribera said, answering a question about the case during a recent speech to representatives of the European Parliament.

A Meta✴ representative once again criticized the European Commission’s policy towards American tech giants. “It’s not just about fines. The Commission is trying to hurt successful American companies just because they are American, while Chinese and European competitors remain unpunished,” said a Meta✴ representative.
