Rumors of Apple’s plans to release a more affordable version of the Watch SE smartwatch with a plastic case have been circulating for quite some time. After Apple failed to unveil an updated Watch SE during its September presentation, there were reports in the media that the device had encountered difficulties in its development. Now, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has reported that the Watch SE with a plastic case is “in serious danger” and may not make it to market.

Last year, Gurman wrote that the team had encountered some problems “in terms of price and quality” in creating a plastic-cased version of the smartwatch, but that work on the device was ongoing. Now, the journalist has reported that the difficulties in developing the Watch SE have proven to be more serious, and the device may ultimately not make it to market at all.

According to Gurman, “the design team didn’t like the look of the device, and the manufacturing team had a hard time creating a case that was significantly cheaper than the aluminum one used in existing smartwatches.” It’s been more than two years since Apple released the second-generation Watch SE, and the model now looks dated. An update to this version of the Apple smartwatch is clearly overdue, but it seems like the plastic case has proven difficult to fit into the overall design of the device.
