Scorching reviews from critics did not prevent the film “Minecraft in the Cinema” (A Minecraft Movie) based on the popular block sandbox Minecraft from Mojang from captivating the world audience upon release.

Let us recall that the rating of “Minecraft in Cinema” on the aggregator sites Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes is 47% and 48% respectively. The film adaptation is praised for its direction and acting, and criticized for its unclear plot and weak action scenes.

Despite a cool reception from the industry press, Minecraft in the Cinema made a splash in theaters, showing the most successful start of any video game adaptation in history in the United States.

According to PC Gamer, the box office receipts for Minecraft in the US during its first weekend exceeded $157 million (analysts predicted the film would make $70 to $90 million at best) and $301 million worldwide.

Until now, the record for the highest opening gross in the US for a video game adaptation was held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $146 million, while internationally, The Super Mario Bros. movie grossed $377 million in five days (Minecraft had three).

According to the plot, four losers are sucked into a cubic world through a mysterious portal. To return home, the heroes will have to show courage and ingenuity, as well as team up with local expert Steve.

The world premiere of “Minecraft the Movie” was on April 2, and the American premiere was on the 4th. The film was directed by “Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess, and the leading roles went to Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
