Corning Introduces Gorilla Glass Ceramic – Protective Glass with Ceramic Admixture That Can Be Dropped on Asphalt

Corning Incorporated has introduced a tough, transparent glass-ceramic material called Gorilla Glass Ceramic, which the company says will improve the durability of mobile devices. Gorilla Glass Ceramic is said to be more resistant to drops onto hard surfaces than competing aluminosilicate glass.

In laboratory testing, Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic panels withstood 10 drops from a height of one meter onto a surface that imitated the hardness and texture of asphalt, while aluminosilicate glass cracked after the first drop.

The new material will join Corning’s portfolio of durable protective materials for Corning Gorilla Glass for OEMs. The company said it expects a new Motorola device with Gorilla Glass Ceramic to be released in the coming months.
