Chinese display maker BOE has again encountered quality problems in its production of OLED panels for iPhones, prompting Apple to consider redirecting orders to Samsung Display and LG Display, South Korean sources say.
The Chinese display maker is struggling to meet Apple’s quality standards for LTPS OLED displays destined for the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 models. Despite its efforts, BOE has only managed to supply Apple with around 7-8 million panels since early 2024, well short of Apple’s stated need of 40 million displays.
The quality issues are expected to take at least six weeks to resolve. This is not the first time BOE has had a problem with iPhone displays. In 2023, due to light leakage issues around the Dynamic Island cutout for the iPhone 15 displays, Apple was forced to significantly reduce orders.
Experts believe that Samsung Display will now receive most of the diverted orders, as LG Display’s production capacity is mainly focused on producing LTPO OLED displays for iPhone Pro models.
