China has begun to introduce an improved alternative to Bluetooth – Star Flash technology

The China Video Industry Association (CVIA) recently approved a new communication standard for universal remote controls (UCRCs) that makes it easier to interact with home devices. Universal remotes automatically detect which device the user wants to configure, establish a connection, and facilitate the transfer of data, such as streaming video from a set-top box to the screen. The accepted standard, the main goal of which is to ensure simpler and more convenient connection of devices, such as TVs and game consoles, “obliges” remote controls to support voice commands and work with one of three technologies – infrared communication, Bluetooth or the same Star Flash.

Star Flash is being developed by the SparkLink alliance, which includes major Chinese technology companies, including Huawei. The new standard offers many advantages over existing technologies. It is based on elements of 5G networks, supports simultaneous connection of several devices and is characterized by low power consumption, which also has a positive effect on the operating time of devices. Interestingly, Star Flash supports the transmission of uncompressed stereo audio (WAVE and AIFF), which makes the technology a promising solution for both consumer electronics and other applications.

The Chinese government reportedly plans to roll out the Star Flash standard to millions of home devices nationwide as early as 2025, providing domestic manufacturers with the investment opportunities needed to further develop the technology. Manufacturers have already begun to implement this technology, in particular, Konka was the first to release a TV that is compatible with a universal remote control with Star Flash.
