OpenAI has updated the Advanced Voice Mode feature, a real-time voice communication format with ChatGPT, the day before. The AI assistant has become more pleasant to talk to and has learned to interrupt users less often.

With the latest update, OpenAI has attempted to address a problem common to many AI voice assistants — they often interrupt users when they pause to think or take a deep breath. An updated version of Advanced Voice Mode has become available to users of the free version of ChatGPT, which now allows for longer pauses in speech without interrupting the other person. Subscribers to paid versions of the service, including ChatGPT Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro plans, have received not only a more sensitive but also a more personalized voice assistant — its responses have become “more direct, interesting, concise, specific, and creative,” OpenAI said.
OpenAI has established itself as a world leader in artificial intelligence, but it is struggling to stay ahead of the competition. In the voice assistant space, Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe’s Sesame startup has recently gone viral with its natural-sounding Maya and Miles versions of the service. Big players are also releasing voice assistants with powerful AI: Amazon recently unveiled Alexa+ with generative AI, and Apple was forced to delay the release of its smarter Siri, which turned into a serious scandal.
