ChatGPT’s audience has doubled since August to 400 million weekly users, and it’s growing

OpenAI is looking more and more like a commercial company, announcing today that it has reached 400 million weekly active users. The pace of growth appears to be accelerating, as the company had “only” 300 million users in December 2024, and 200 million at the end of August.

OpenAI did not disclose the number of paid customers with an active subscription to ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro. But OpenAI is doing well on the B2B front, reporting 2 million paid enterprise users, double the number in September 2024. Developer calls to the API have also doubled in the last six months.

It’s worth noting that OpenAI released these figures just weeks after China’s DeepSeek unveiled its rival technology. It appears that OpenAI is keen to demonstrate that its business is thriving despite competitive pressure.
