California is a place with a climate that is favorable enough for electric vehicles and a high standard of living that encourages their adoption. It is no surprise that the state now has 48% more EV charging stations than gas pumps.

According to the official press release, there were more than 178,000 electric vehicle chargers in operation in California last year. This is more than twice as many as in 2022, and 26,193 more than in August last year, when such statistics were last counted. However, this includes not only public charging stations, but also private devices that owners are willing to share access to. For comparison, there are currently only 120,000 gas pumps in California.

Of the 73,537 charging stations that have appeared since 2023, just under half were built before 2024, but simply weren’t included in the statistics before that. As of 2023, there were 105,012 publicly accessible EV charging stations in California. Incidentally, of the 178,000 charging stations in the state, more than 162,000 use AC power as a source of electricity and therefore recharge quite slowly. In fact, there are currently no more than 17,000 high-speed EV chargers in California, which are convenient, for example, when using transit transport. Another 700,000 or more charging stations are installed on private property, and access to them is restricted to outsiders.
At the same time, no more than 11.3% of the total US population lives in California, and the state’s share of zero-emission vehicle sales in overall US statistics reaches 30%. For the second year in a row, every fourth state resident has chosen a zero-emission vehicle when choosing a new vehicle. In the fourth quarter of last year, Californians purchased more than 108,000 zero-emission vehicles. By the end of last year, the number of zero-emission vehicles sold in the state exceeded 2 million units since the start of observations.
