Apple will answer in court for toxic and hazardous chemicals in smartwatch straps

A lawsuit has been filed in the Northern District Court of California against Apple, which, according to the plaintiff, used “eternal chemicals” in the manufacture of three fluoroelastomer straps for the Apple Watch smartwatch: the Sport straps that come with the device, as well as the Ocean and Nike Sport straps. supplied with a special version of the Apple Watch Nike.

“Forever chemicals” refer to PFAS—perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds that do not degrade over time. They can accumulate in the human body, posing a threat of cancer, a weakened immune system, developmental delays in children and hormonal disorders. These toxic substances have been found not only in smartwatch bands, but also in non-stick cookware, mattresses, waterproof clothing and many other products.

Apple is also not the only manufacturer that sells straps with “eternal chemicals.” They were found in accessories for Google Pixel Watch 3, Samsung Galaxy Watch Sport and OnePlus Watch 2. But two years ago, Apple for the first time promised to phase out these substances in its products. And at the end of last year, a lawsuit was filed against Samsung for using “eternal chemicals” in the manufacture of smartwatch straps.
