Apple to introduce MacBook Pro with M5 chips this fall, while iPad Pro will receive them only next year

Apple will introduce a MacBook Pro laptop with a next-generation chip, the Apple M5, this fall, after which the processor will appear in updated iPad Pro tablets in the first half of 2026, writes Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.

This news runs counter to previous expectations regarding the order of transition of the Cupertino company’s devices from the current M4 to the new M5, which were based on last year’s order of release of Apple devices with the M4 processor. Then the company first introduced the M4 in the updated iPad Pro in May 2024, and then in October it “got a residence permit” in the MacBook Pro.

According to Gurman, before the release of the MacBook Pro on the new M5 chip, the company will release updated Mac Studio and Mac Pro computers with the current-generation M4 processor. As the journalist believes, the new products may be presented at the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held in June.

The M5 chips are expected to feature an improved ARM architecture and be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process. Apple’s decision to forgo TSMC’s more advanced 2nm process for the M5 chip is said to be due to cost concerns, sources said. However, the high-end versions of the M5 will see significant improvements over their M4 equivalents, primarily due to the use of TSMC’s System on Integrated Chip (SoIC) 3D packaging technology.
