Apple is being sued for false advertising because it misled consumers by failing to deliver on its promise to release certain features of its Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence platform within the specified timeframe. According to the lawsuit, many people bought the iPhone 16 and other Apple devices believing that these features were already included in the new devices because the company advertised them heavily.
«”Apple’s advertising created a clear and reasonable expectation in consumers that these transformative features would be available upon the release of the iPhone,” said the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose by Clarkson Law Firm on behalf of plaintiffs seeking class action status.
The lawsuit says the promotion of Apple Intelligence features “created unprecedented excitement” as Apple sought to “persuade consumers to upgrade at a higher price.” “Contrary to Defendant’s claims of advanced AI capabilities, the products offered a significantly limited or completely absent version of Apple Intelligence, misleading consumers about its actual usefulness and performance,” the document states.
The plaintiffs acknowledged that Apple removed YouTube ads promoting a more personalized Siri assistant, but also noted that the company “failed to rebut all such false claims.”
Earlier, there were reports that iOS 19 would not bring any major innovations, since the addition of new AI features to Siri as part of the platform update had to be postponed, quite possibly until next year.
The lawsuit is yet another headache for Apple as it struggles to launch its promised Apple Intelligence features, TechCrunch writes. As Bloomberg reported, Apple CEO Tim Cook “lost confidence in AI chief John Giannandrea’s ability to drive product development.” Mike Rockwell, the Vision Pro lead, was eventually appointed as the new head of the division.
